4. Change Windows Settings

The next step is to change Windows settings on the new computer.

Windows XP
1. Access Windows with an administrator account.
2. Press Windows Logo+R or select Start > Run.
The Run window displays.
1. Type "devmgmt.msc" and press Enter.
The Device Manager displays.
1. Double-click Disk drives.
2. Complete the following for every disk drive listed:
1. Right-click on the hard disk and select Properties.
The Properties window displays.
1. Click the Policies tab.
2. Deselect Enable write caching on the device.
3. Click OK.
1. On the Device Manager, double-click Network adapters, right-click on the network card and select Properties.
The Properties window displays.
1. Click the Power Management tab.
2. Deselect Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
1. Click OK.
2. Restart the computer.

Windows Server 2003
1. Access Windows with an administrator account.
2. Press Windows Logo+R or select Start > Run.
The Run window displays.
1. Type "devmgmt.msc" and press Enter.
The Device Manager displays.
1. Double-click Disk drives.
2. Complete the following for every disk drive listed:
1. Right-click on the hard disk and select Properties.
The Properties window displays.
1. Click the Policies tab.
2. Deselect Enable write caching on the device.
3. Click OK.
1. On the Device Manager, double-click Network adapters, right-click on the network card and select Properties.
The Properties window displays.
1. Click the Power Management tab.
2. Deselect Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
1. Click OK and close the Device Manager.
2. Press Windows Logo+R or select Start > Run.
The Run window displays.
1. Type "sysdm.cpl" and press Enter.
The System Properties window displays.
1. Click the Advanced tab.
2. Click Settings in the Performance section.
The Performance Options window displays.
1. Click the Data Execution Prevention tab.
2. Select Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only.
1. Click OK until the System Properties window closes.
2. Restart the computer.

Windows Vista
1. Access Windows with an administrator account.
2. Click Start, type "devmgmt.msc", and press Enter.
The Device Manager displays.
1. Double-click Disk drives.
2. Complete the following for every disk drive listed:

1. Click the Policies tab.

2. Right-click on the Windows desktop and select Personalize.
The Personalization screen displays.
1. Type "uac" in the Search field.
A list of search results displays.
1. Click Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off.
The Turn User Account Control On or Off screen displays.
1. Deselect Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer.
1. Click OK.
2. Click Restart Later.
3. Open the Control Panel and click Network and Internet.
4. Click Offline Files.
The Offline Files window displays.
1. Click Disable offline files.
1. Click OK.
2. Click Yes to restart the computer.

Windows Server 2008
1. Access Windows with an administrator account.

1. Click Start, type "mobsync.exe", and press Enter.
The Sync Center screen displays.
1. Click Manage offline files.
The Offline Files window displays.
1. Click Disable Offline Files.
1. Click OK.
2. Click Yes to restart the computer.

2. On the Start screen, type "uac" and click Settings.
1. Click Change User Account Control settings.
The User Account Control Settings window displays.
1. Move the slider to Never notify.
1. Click OK.
2. On the Start screen, type "cmd".
1. Right-click on the Command Prompt app and select Run as administrator.
The Command Prompt displays.
1. Type "net user administrator / active:yes" and press Enter.
1. On the Start screen, type "control panel" and press Enter.
The Control Panel displays.
1. Click User Accounts.
2. Click Manage another account.
3. Click the Administrator account.
4. Click Change the password.
5. Type a password to use for the Administrator account.
6. Click Change password.
7. Restart the computer.

Windows 8 Pro/Enterprise
1. Access Windows with an administrator account.
1. On the Start screen, type "devmgmt.msc" and press Enter.
The Device Manager displays.
1. Double-click Disk drives.

1. Select Disabled.
1. Click OK.
2. Restart the computer.

2. Scroll down to the end of the list and double-click the User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode policy.
The User Account Control window displays.
1. Select Disabled.
1. Click OK.
2. Restart the computer.
